Dear HF community,
I’m coming to you with an extremely heavy heart. What's happened in Texas the last few days is devastating and there's a particular situation that's personal to me.
I know that many of you
know Mikki Willis and you’ve been following the story of the Hammond family. Many others are posting about it, too.
The Hammonds are strong HF advocates in the Texas Hill Country. They moved back to TX to avoid the horrific mandate situation in CA and are very active and engaged in their community of Marble Falls.
They've been devastated by the loss of their eldest daughter, Malaya,
age 17.
I know this family—I spent several days with all five of them at a retreat in 2023. Her parents have become my friends.
You can read my short story of getting to know the Hammonds and how special they are here.
On July 5, their car plummeted into a raging river. Malaya was able to open a door to allow her family to escape and everyone made it to land except for
her.
For two days, there was a water, land, and air search. Since Sat. morning, I’ve been on the edge of my seat, sobbing off and on, praying that she was in a tree, and connecting with our mutual friends over this travesty.
She was found this morning “in her final resting place, sitting peacefully upright, beneath trees, and wrapped in nature.”
She saved her family from drowning.
